Burlesque Show Etiquette: What Audiences Should Know

Burlesque is interactive, but that does not mean anything goes. Good audience etiquette is simple: be enthusiastic, respect the performers, respect the venue, and understand that participation is invited rather than assumed.

Cheering is usually welcome

Burlesque performers work with the energy of the room. Applause, laughter and appreciative cheering are commonly part of the experience. Follow the tone of the production and the audience around you.

Do not touch performers without invitation

Audience interaction is not blanket permission for physical contact. If a performer or host invites participation, follow the instruction given. Otherwise, let the performer control the interaction.

Photography rules vary

Some productions allow photography, some restrict flash, and some prohibit recording entirely. Check the venue or show’s stated policy. When in doubt, keep the phone down.

Arrive like you would for theater

Know your start time, seating arrangement and check-in procedure. Late arrival can be more disruptive in an intimate room than in a large theater.
